All of our Lapis Lazuli watercolors, in both palettes and pans, are now made with this exquisite Fra Angelico blue pigment. This historic color is made by grinding semi-precious lapis lazuli stones into a powder and exacting the purest pigment in small, artisan batches.
Lapis Lazuli is an intense deep blue color made from the semi-precious stone used in historical painting. It is a semi-transparent, medium grained color with moderate tinting strength. Intense, granulating and extra fine.
The stone has been mined for 6,000 years. Ultramarine was the finest and most expensive blue used by Renaissance painters. It was often used for the robes of the Virgin Mary, symbolizing holiness. Artificial ultramarine was invented in 1828.
Made by hand in Assisi, our watercolors are crafted according to a traditional recipe of raw pigments, gum arabic, local honey, rosemary essential oil and a wetting agent. This artisanal process creates a very pigmented and luminous paint that activates beautifully when wet.
Not intended for use by children. Wash hands after use. A. Gallo Colors are all cadmium, cobalt, lead and mercury free.
