FINEST QUALITY

Handmade in Italy, our watercolors are crafted according to a traditional recipe of raw pigments, gum arabic from the acacia tree, local honey from Umbria and rosemary essential oil. Every batch of paint is made from premium pigments and hand poured into pans. This intensive process creates a very pigmented, luminous, and pure paint with excellent lightfastness that activates beautifully when wet.

ECO-FRIENDLY

Our watercolors are free of cadmium, cobalt, lead and mercury. Featuring the best natural, historical and innovative modern pigments available today, our vision is to connect users with materials that have been used by artists throughout the ages in an environmentally friendly way.

ARTIST MADE

Developed for artists by artists, our team of skilled artisans ensures that each product is infused with tradition, expertise, and a personal touch, enhancing the authenticity and quality of our offerings and supporting the preservation of traditional crafts and the local economies.

CONTEMPORARY APPROACH TO HISTORICAL COLOR

A. Gallo Colors draws inspiration from the rich history of pigments used by artists across cultures and a deep passion for cross-cultural manuscript painting techniques. Our products reflect our shared dedication to excellence, sustainability, and cultural heritage. Each set is packaged by hand with original marbled paper crafted by a
Florentine artisan workshop, and presented in an elegant gift box. It is a joy to share the poetry and power of these historical recipes with you.

Our handmade watercolors are available in special themed palettes and as individual full and half pans in over 110 colors. The collection highlights premium pigment families prized for their intensity, saturation, lightfast and nontoxic qualities, offering today’s artist an uncompromising alternative to paints made with cadmium, cobalt and mercury compounds.

A. Gallo Colors studio is lead by artist Alina Gallo who has a background in Italian and Persian paint-making traditions. In 2017, with her husband Giuliano Matteucci, she founded A. Gallo Colors in Assisi following a period of research into Timurid, Safavid and Ottoman manuscripts in collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum Department of Islamic Arts, the Topkapi Palace Library in Istanbul and the Museum of Art at Bowdoin College’s Islamic Manuscript Collection.
